The Hubballi Ankola Rail Project is disastrous for the western ghats and our biodiversity. This project will fell approximately 2.2 lakh trees for a railway line passing between Kali Tiger National Reserve and the Bedthi Conservation Reserve. More than 80% of this proposed line would cut through the Western Ghats. This endangers over 29 species of mammals, 256 species of birds, 8 species of reptiles, and 50 species of butterflies.

Additionally, the proposal for the project has been passed in a questionable manner, with the Minister for Forest and Ecology of the Government of Karnataka being absent while this was passed. The proposal for the project has been rejected multiple times in the past, at various levels.
